Fence material example

100 Ft Fence Material List

Quick answer: for a straight 100 ft fence with an 8 ft maximum post spacing, 3 rails per bay, 5.5 in pickets, a 1/8 in gap and 10% extra pickets, this example calculates 14 posts, 39 rails and 236 pickets. Gates, corners and your actual dimensions can change the result.

The table uses the same simple straight-run assumptions as the example above. It is a comparison chart, not a substitute for the full calculator when a fence has gates or direction changes.

How the 100 ft example is calculated

An 8 ft maximum spacing does not mean every bay is exactly 8 ft. A 100 ft run needs 13 equal bays so no bay exceeds the maximum; that produces 14 posts on a straight uninterrupted run. Pickets are calculated from the clear run using actual picket width plus gap, then the 10% extra allowance is applied and the result is rounded up to whole pickets.

Concrete and fasteners

Concrete depends on post-hole diameter, depth, post displacement and any drainage-gravel detail. Fasteners depend on pickets, rails and the fastening assumptions. The full Fence Calculator calculates both from your project inputs, while the Fence Post Concrete Calculator focuses on post holes and common bag sizes.

Fence cost

Material prices vary by fence style, lumber or panel choice, post type, region and retailer. Rather than publishing a stale universal cost-per-foot number, PlanDIYBuild's full calculator applies planning prices to the calculated takeoff so you can understand which quantities drive the estimate and compare current prices before buying.

Frequently asked questions

How many posts do I need for a 100 ft fence?

For a straight 100 ft run with a maximum 8 ft spacing, dividing into equal bays requires 13 bays and 14 posts before adding special posts for gates, corners or separate runs.

How many pickets do I need for 100 ft of fence?

Using 5.5 inch actual-width pickets with a 1/8 inch gap, a 100 ft clear run is about 214 pickets before waste. With a 10% extra allowance, the planning quantity rounds to 236 pickets.

Does this include gates and corners?

The quick table is for a straight uninterrupted run. Use the full Fence Calculator to model gates, corners, L-shapes, three-sided layouts or a closed yard.
