Mulch bag conversion formula
Bags = cubic yards × 27 ÷ bag volume in cubic feet. To convert bags back to bulk yards, multiply the number of bags by the bag volume and divide by 27.
How many bags of mulch equal 1, 2, 3, 4, 7 or 8 yards?
One cubic yard equals 13.5 two-ft³ bags or 9 three-ft³ bags. Two yards equal 27 or 18 bags; three yards equal 40.5 or 27; four yards equal 54 or 36; seven yards equal 94.5 or 63; and eight yards equal 108 or 72. For a purchase quantity, round fractional bags up to the next whole bag.
How many whole bags should I buy?
Always round the calculated bag quantity up to a whole bag when purchasing. For example, 3 cubic yards requires 40.5 two-cubic-foot bags by volume, so buy at least 41 bags; 7 cubic yards requires 94.5, so buy at least 95 bags. This is a volume conversion, not an allowance for settling or project-specific extra material.
