Drywall quantity formula

Sheets = (net surface area × waste factor) ÷ sheet area, rounded up. Net surface area can include walls, ceilings or both depending on the project.

Example: 12 × 12 room

A 12 × 12 ft room with 8 ft walls has 384 ft² of gross wall area. Adding 10% gives 422.4 ft². Dividing by 32 ft² and rounding up gives 14 sheets of 4×8 drywall before openings are deducted.

Should doors and windows be deducted?

For a detailed takeoff, openings can be deducted from wall area. But cuts and layout can consume some theoretical savings, especially on small projects. The Drywall Calculator exposes the net area and waste allowance so the assumptions remain visible.
