Deck Mud / Floor Mud Calculator
Estimate dry-pack deck mud or floor mud from project length and width, then use the thin and thick sides to estimate average thickness, total mortar-bed volume and bags. Enter the yield printed on your exact product rather than relying on a universal bag assumption.
Deck mud / floor mud
See how project length, width, minimum thickness and maximum thickness define a level or simply sloped mortar bed; bag yield and waste allowance convert that volume into purchase quantity.

Start with the essentials
Enter the mortar-bed area, thin and thick sides, and the yield printed on your bag. Extra material stays adjustable below.

Deck mud and floor mud estimating
Formula: For a uniform bed or simple one-way / planar slope, PlanDIYBuild averages the entered minimum and maximum thickness, multiplies that average thickness by the project area, adds the selected extra-material allowance, then divides by the bag yield you enter.
Worked example: Example: a 3 × 5 ft mortar bed with a simple one-way slope from 2 in to 1 in has an average planning thickness of 1.5 in before extra material is added.
Before you buy: This is a planning estimate for a uniform bed or simple one-way / planar slope. A point-drain shower pan can have more complex geometry, so verify the required slope, drain height, perimeter thickness, substrate preparation, waterproofing and minimum thickness for your system. Deck mud, floor mud and dry-pack products also vary; use the yield stated for the exact product or mix you plan to use.
Deck Mud / Floor Mud Calculator FAQ
Is deck mud the same as floor mud?
The terms are often used for similar dry-pack mortar beds, but mix proportions and product instructions can differ. Use the requirements for the system you are installing.
Why does the calculator ask for minimum and maximum thickness?
For a uniform bed or simple one-way / planar slope, averaging the thin and thick sides provides a practical volume estimate. Point-drain shower pans can have more complex geometry, so treat this as a planning estimate and verify your actual bed requirements.
How do I estimate bags accurately?
Enter the yield printed on the exact bagged product you plan to use. Bag yields vary, so the calculator does not treat one package size as universal.
